Every guy out there has at one time fantasized about becoming a superhero.  When we were boys, we would run around the house with towels or sheets tied around our neck, screaming “up, up and away!” and dashing about until we hit our heads on a piece of furniture and had to go get stitches.  Each of us had our favorite comic book superhero we looked up to.  Most of us wanted to be Superman, Batman, Spider-Man or Captain America.  A lot of us still do.

But a few of us, like myself, had other superheroes in mind outside of the more famous household names.  One of my favorites from the earliest days of watching Super Friends on Saturday morning TV was the Green Lantern.  What young boy wouldn’t want to be like Hal Jordan?  First off, he was a test pilot, which means he got to fly the cool new fighter jets before anybody else.  That, in and of itself, was enough to charge the dreams of any young guy.  But then you’ve got that ring, the ring that makes you able to fly and create anything you want out of thin air.

Girls, if you are having trouble getting your guy to commit, just make sure that the wedding ring you buy for him looks like Green Lantern’s power ring.  We all WANT that ring.

Come Summer of 2011, guys will get to relive their fantasies of being part of the Green Lantern Corps.  Warner Bros is releasing Green Lantern to the big screen, with Ryan Reynolds in the title role.  Given the huge success of previous DC Comics properties like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, one would hope that Lantern will be equally good and respectful of the source material.  (I am hoping for less of the type of material that was Superman Returns, however.)  Reynolds is no stranger to the superhero genre, having played the role of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and he appears to be having fun in the new trailer.  The costume is revealed in the latter half of the trailer and it is very faithful to the comic version.

So, without further adieu, here’s the trailer:

And if you don’t want to wait for summer to get your Green Lantern fix, I would recommend viewing the amazing DC Universe animated film Green Lantern: First Flight.
